When patients are missing teeth or have damaged teeth that need replacing, dental implants are the most popular choice for restoration. They are an extremely successful oral surgery procedure, with a success rate of 98%. Before we determine your treatment, you will meet with our oral surgeon, Dr. Brar, so he can evaluate your oral health, review your health history, take any necessary scans, and discuss your options and goals for treatment. During this time, you will also have an opportunity to ask any questions.
What are dental implants?
Patients with missing or damaged teeth are encouraged to visit our oral surgeon near Mount Vernon, WA, to learn more about dental implants and why they are so popular. Their unique three-part design includes
- The medical-grade titanium screw, which Dr. Brar will place into the jaw bone to act as the secure base for the implant. This screw mimics a natural tooth root.
- The abutment, which attaches to the screw and connects it to the new tooth.
- The new tooth, also known as the crown, which your restorative dentist custom designs to look just like your natural teeth.
What are the benefits?
If you’re interested in dental implants for tooth replacement, they offer many advantages over other options, including
- Increased jaw stability
- Improved diet
- Bone loss prevention
- Natural appearance
- Increased self confidence
- Improved speech
In addition to the above benefits, caring for your new teeth is easy. Dental implants require no special care — you simply need to brush and floss daily, as you would with natural teeth. If you live in Mount Vernon, WA, and want to know more about the care of dental implants and their advantages, we encourage you to call or visit our office.
The Procedure
After your consultation, our oral surgeon will develop a personalized treatment plan that fits your needs. You will then return at a later date for your surgical appointment. In the time before your procedure, you are expected to review your pre- and post-operative instructions to ensure you are properly prepared for your oral surgery.
At your surgical appointment, Dr. Brar will administer your chosen form of anesthesia to help you relax. Once you are comfortable and/or asleep, he will carefully lift your gum tissue and insert the screw into the empty socket. Using stitches, he will close the surgical site and wake you from sedation. After you return home, you will spend the next few months healing while the implant screw integrates with the jaw bone. In some instances, the abutment is placed with the crew, in which case this may protrude through the gums while you heal. In others, you will return after your screw has healed for the placement of both the abutment and the custom-designed crown.
